Abstract
341,578. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and GALLIZIA, E., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birmingham. Oct. 30, 1929, No. 32911. [Class 39 (i).] In mercury-vapour rectifiers with several anodes, hot spots at or near the inner edge 3, Fig. 2, of an anode 1 are prevented by means within the anode shield 2 deflecting the arc so that its direction of flow towards the anode shall have an outward component near the working face of the anode. The deflectors may comprise vanes 6 of thin metal sheet or silica immediately below the anode 1 and inclined outwardly. The vanes may be carried by the anode shield 2 or by a sleeve 5 carried by radial insulating strips. The sleeve 5 may be of less diameter than the shield 2 and of greater diameter than the anode 1 and may extend above the vanes 6, its upper edge being near or above the working face of the anode. In modifications, a single deflecting plate is provided and extends from the inner side of the anode shield as at 4, Fig. 3, or comprises a single-turn helix 41, Fig. 4, with the upper end 61 beneath the inner side of the anode and with the outer edge of the strip near or touching the anode shield. The Provisional Specification describes also the outward deflection of the arc by the field of an electromagnet or of conductors which carry the anode currents and which are parallel to the anode shield.
