Indiarubber is liquefied by heat and is then treated with isomerizing substances such as sulphuric acid, sulphonic acids, sulphonyl chlorides, sulphuric esters, and metallic halides, with or without phenolic bodies, to convert it into a thermoplastic substance. According to an example, pale crepe is killed by masticating, and is then heated for 24 hours in an oil bath to 250‹-270‹ C. To 50 parts of the liquid obtained are gradually added 2.5 parts of phenol and 2.5 parts of concentrated sulphuric acid with stirring. The mass is baked in air at 160‹ for an hour to produce a dark brown brittle mass with softens at 70‹-100‹ C.
