Abstract

Lids and covers.-A foot-operated device alternately raises and lowers with softened impact hinged box covers &c. on successive depressions of the pedal, to which the cover is connected by spring-loaded lever mechanism. A member 1 consists of two superposed and rigidly connected plates one of which is pivoted at 2 to a supporting frame 24 and is rigidly connected to a slotted lever 3 engaging a pin on the cover. The other plate of the member 1 is provided with a slot 4 in which engages a roller 6 on a link bar 5 connected to a spring- loaded pedal 9, on depression of which the pivoted member 1 is turned through about 90‹. On release of the pedal, the link bar is drawn to the bottom of the slot 4 so that the next depression of the pedal restores the member 1 and the lever 3 to their former positions, thus lowering the cover. A bell-crank lever 13, 14, pivoted at 12 to the member 1 is provided with two stops 15 which limit the movement of the member 1 and soften the impact of the cover by striking in each extreme position of the pivoted member a rubber buffer 17 fixed to the supporting frame. A tension spring 19 for braking the acceleration of the fall is also provided.
