Abstract

337,899. Collins, J. N. Sept. 16, 1929. Continuoous discharge apparatus, rotary; screw and helical blade conveyers; heating-fittings. - Apparatus suitable for drying small metal objects comprises a rotary drum, screw means for feeding the articles together with sawdust or the like through the drum and means for returning the used sawdust to the inlet end in a dry condition. A helical vane 9 fixed to the interior of the drum 5 traverses the articles from a feeding shoot 3a to a discharge shoot 10. The sawdust passes out through the perforations in the part 5a of the drum into a truncated conical member 11 and thence through a duct constituted by the interior of an external screw thread 12 to the inlet end of the drum to be charged again with the wet articles. Gas burners 13 dry the sawdust during the return passage and heat the drum. A vibrating or oscillatory perforated table 3 drains the wet articles prior to charging and plates 8 projecting inwardly from the inner surface of the drum in staggered formation cause the tumbling of the articles so that they are burnished during their passage through the drums. The drum may be enclosed in a housing provided with a chimney.
