919,582. Drying endless synthetic filaments. VEREINIGTE GLANZSTOFF - FABRIKEN A.G. March 1, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 7528/61. Class 34 (1). [Also in Group IX] A process for continuously drying and setting crimped tows of endless synthetic filament issuing from a compression chamber 1 packs the tows with a traversing action (at 2, Fig. 1) into a hollow shaft 3 in which they are moved continuously forward by their own weight and are brought into contact along sections of their travel 6, 10 with streams of hot air or saturated steam, and thereafter of cold air, directed at right-angles to their path. The apparatus for this process has a rectangular shaft (Fig. 3) vertically below the chamber 1 with the sections 6 and 10 jacketed and provided with diametrically opposed openings and with supply and discharge pipes 8, 12-9, 13. Movement of the tows through the shaft may be controlled by curving the end of the shaft as in Fig. 2, or by operation of a pair of hinged plates 4, counterbalanced by weights at 5, which open to discharge successive batches of the tows each time the weight of the latter accumulated in the shaft overcomes the force due to the counterweights.
