Abstract

A fleece is made by air-laying continuous filaments on a moving conveyor belt, adding water to the fleece to temporarily strengthen it (by virtue of the surface tension of the water acting on the filaments), removing the fleece from the conveyor belt, permeating with a binder and drying the process prevents binder accumulating on the conveyor belt. The binder can be added after the water has been sprayed into the fleece and whilst it is suspended between two conveyors. The fleece can be passed through a heater whilst it is suspended to cure the binder. The fleece can be dried on another conveyor belt or on a drum drier. The binder can be polyacrylic or a latex. The filaments can be freshly spun and separated using electrostatic or aerodynamic forces. Alternatively drawn filaments forwarded from creels can be used. The filaments can be made of polyamides, polyesters, or polyurethanes.
