Abstract
<PICT:0808518/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0808518/IV (c)/2> A tow of polyacrylonitrile filamentary material, which has been hot-crimped mechanically, passes to a quenching zone provided by a circulation of cooled gas through which it travels in relaxed state on a moving support. In the apparatus shown, the crimped tow 10 is led from the crimper to a quencher 12 in the section 14 of which it passes between feed rolls 20 and 22 and through a tube which reciprocates to lay the tow (optionally, assisted by a shoot) in a transverse zig-zag pattern upon a support 26, e.g. a continuously moving perforated or porous apron or wire screen, by which it is conveyed through a quenching zone 32 wherein a fan 42 circulates air which is cleaned by a filter 34 and cooled by coils 36 through which a cold fluid, e.g. refrigerated brine solution, circulates. The tow leaves the support at 44 and falls into a shoot 46.
