Abstract

<PICT:0852351/IV(a)/1> In a process for melt spinning linear synthetic polyamides into threads which are collected in a reeling room, the threads are cooled by means of a gaseous stream, and subsequently prior to applying sizing thereto are passed through a space heated at a temperature higher than the temperture of the reeling room and higher than 40 DEG C., and the relative humidity whereof is not higher than that of the reeling room. The process may be carried out by use of apparatus comprising spinneret 10, means for directing a gaseous stream onto the thread, e.g. a source of air entering blowing box 12 through pipe 13, cylindrical sleeve 16 having entry and exit orifices 20, 21 for the thread and means for heating the sleeve, e.g. jacket 17 having inlet 18 and outlet 19 for hot fluid circulation. Orifice 21 has preferably a very small diameter so that the thread issuing therethrough takes with it only a minimal quantity of hot air. Subsequently the thread may pass through sizing device 22 before collection on bobbin 29. Specified polyamides are hexamethylene diamine polyadipate, polycaprolactam and polyaminoundecanoate. Examples are given.
