Abstract

Filaments of synthetic thermoplastic materials are made by a melt-spinning process, in which the filaments emerge from the spinning nozzle into a zone, at least 1 metre in length, of a spinning tube, the zone being held at a temperature 10 DEG -80 DEG C. (preferably 10 DEG -50 DEG C.) below the melting point of the synthetic thermoplastic material, the lower portion of the tube being held at a temperature, below 100 DEG C., and the filaments being reeled at a speed between 1,300 and 2,600 metres per min. (preferably 1,500-2,000 m./min.) whereby the filaments are stretched while passing through the aforementioned zone. The heating zone may be heated directly, e.g. by infra-red radiation, or by passing a heating medium through it. The filaments may be cooled in the lower portion of the spinning tube by blowing a cooling medium on to them, e.g. a cooled gas or a moisture-containing gas. In a modification, preferred where a heating medium is used in the heating zone, the spinning tube consists of two separate parts, the upper part being held at 10 DEG -80 DEG C. below the melting point of p the synthetic material by passing a heating medium through it, the lower part of the spinning tube being held at a temperature below 100 DEG C., there being means for supplying and withdrawing the heating medium to the upper part of the spinning tube. The heating medium, e.g. preheated nitrogen, may be blown on to the filaments either in the direction of spinning or in the opposite direction. Specified materials include polyamides, e.g. polycaprolactam having a low content of low molecular and monomeric constituents, polycarbonates, polyurethanes and polyesters. The filaments may be further stretched before being reeled, preferably at temperatures above 100 DEG C. Conventional hotstretching means are used. Apparatus comprises a spinning tube, the upper portion of which is at least 1 metre in length and is provided with heating means to maintain it at a temperature 10 DEG -80 DEG C. below the melting point of the synthetic thermoplastic material, and means for reeling the filaments at from 1,300-2,600 metres per minute. Preferably, the lower portion of the spinning tube is provided with cooling means. Apparatus suitable for the modified process comprises a spinning tube consisting of two separate parts, there being means for the supply and withdrawal of a heating medium in the upper part of the spinning tube which is at least 1 metre in length and is maintained at 10 DEG -80 DEG C. below the melting point of the synthetic thermoplastic material, and means for reeling the filaments at from 1,300-2,600 metres per minute. Cooling means are preferably provided in the lower part of the spinning tube. French Specification 976,505 and U.S.A. Specification 2,604,667 are referred to.
