Abstract
<PICT:0905072/IV(a)/1> Polycarbonate filamentary materials are made by melt-spinning from a melt-extruding worm press, at temperatures above the softening range of the polycarbonate and below 300 DEG C., with a residence time in the worm press of less than 40 secs., the polycarbonate having such a low water content that the degradation on heating a specimen to 300 DEG C. for 1 min. is less than 1%. Specified polycarbonates include those derived from 2,2-di-(4-hydroxy phenyl)-propane, 1, 1-di(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-ethane or 1,1-di(4-hydroxy-phenol) butane. Apparatus as shown comprises a worm 3 rotating in a cylindrical sleeve 1, fitted with a cooling duct 2. The funnel-shaped intake chamber 4 is fed with raw material from supply pipe 5, and is enclosed by the cover 6 which accomodates the worm mounting 17. The clutch 15 connects the worm to driving motor 16. The lower conical end of the worm runs in a conical recess 8 of the spinning pump unit 7 from which a passage 9 leads to a constant speed measuring pump 10, from which the melt flows through a passage 11 and via filter 13 to the nozzle plate 12. The polycarbonate is heated to a melt by the frictional heat generated by the worm, but the pump unit is fitted with an electric heater 14 to avoid heat losses and hence viscosity changes. Melt-uniformity is enhanced by utilising a driving motor the speed of rotation of which decreases with increasing torque, so that changes in melt-viscosity are automatically compensated by variation in the speed of the worm. After extrusion, the filaments or monofils may be stretched in conventional manner at temperatures above the setting temperature (130 DEG -140 DEG C., depending on the polycarbonate used) but below the softening range (150 DEG -230 DEG C. depending on the polycarbonate used) to draw ratios of up to 1:4.
