Abstract

A solution of an artificial or synthetic film or fibre forming material is extruded into a bath comprising a mixture of a precipitant and a liquid which is the solvent phase of the spinning solution, the fibres or film being withdrawn upwardly from the bath through a washing liquid flowing in a confined stream <PICT:0716827/IV (a)/1> in an opposite direction to the travel of the fibres or film and which comprises the precipitating liquid and optionally a minor proportion of the extrusion solvent, the washing liquid being collected and liquid collected from the washing step being continuously delivered to the precipitating bath at a predetermined rate dependent upon the proportions of precipitant and solvent in the washing liquid and upon the amount of solvent being introduced into the precipitating bath from the extrusion solution so that the proportions of precipitant and solvent in the precipitating bath remain constant. The fibre or film forming material may be cellulose acetate, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile, polyamides, polyesters, copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl acetate, styrene, 2-vinyl pyridine, 5-vinyl-2 methylpyridine, isobutene, dimethylfumarate, methylmethacrylate, methacrylonitrile or acrylic acid and its esters. The solvent, selected according to the film or fibre forming material, may be acetone, hot phenol, formamide, chloroform, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, or dimethyl propionamide. The precipitant which is an extractive for the solvent and is inert to the fibre or film forming material, may be water. At the start of a spinning operation the proportions of precipitant and solvent required in the liquid being delivered from the washing step and the rate at which it is delivered to maintain constant proportions in the precipitating bath are determined by observation of the refractive index of the bath. The washing liquid may be heated up to 100 DEG C. and when the spinning is conducted at temperatures below this the collected washing liquid is cooled. The fibres may be stretched while passing through the washing liquid or subsequently. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a precipitating bath 2 in which the solution is extruded from a nozzle 1 and which is maintained at a constant level by an overflow 16. Washing liquid is delivered from a pipe 10 into a vessel 9 the level being adjusted by an overflow 12, and a stream of washing liquid flows through a channel 6 into a collecting vessel 13 provided with cooling apparatus 18 and an overflow 17. Liquid from the vessel 13 is delivered through a pipe 14 and valve 15 to the precipitating bath. The fibre is guided through the bath 2 by a thread guide 3 and through the channel 6 by godets 4 and 7 over which and over spacing guides 5 and 8 it may be lapped several times.
