Abstract

Molten synthetic linear polymers are extruded through a spinneret and the filaments obtained are passed through a hot liquid whereby they are subjected to increased tension and attenuated and given a degree of molecular orientation such that further stretching is not required, the treatment being effected prior to winding or forwarding to the next operation and no tension being applied to the filaments between the spinneret face and that part of the filament path where solidification takes place. The filaments are preferably pulled unsupported through the liquid bath, which may be water or a high-boiling liquid having no deleterious effect on the filaments and is preferably maintained at a temperature above the second order transition temperature of the polymeric material. The liquid level should preferably be positioned so that substantial quenching of the filaments does not occur and so that the filaments enter the liquid without being heated or cooled. If the hot liquid is in a horizontal container waves on the surface of the liquid may be suppressed by providing a broken-up surface, e.g. glass spheres or corrugations, on the bottom of the liquid container. The filaments may be wound on a bobbin rotating below a surface speed of 3,000 yards per minute or forwarded by a wheel, roll or fluid stream for further processing, e.g. heating, relaxing, crimping or cutting, excess liquid carried by the filaments being blown off with a rapid transverse fluid stream, e.g. air, or by centrifugal force produced by passing the filaments, with a substantial change in direction of their path, over small idler rolls. The filaments may be passed through another heating zone, e.g. a flat electrically heated hot-plate or oven fitted with radiant heaters, at a temperature higher than that of the hot liquid and at least 60 DEG C. below the melting-point of the filaments, after leaving the liquid bath and before winding up or forwarding. Suitable synthetic linear polymers are polyethylene terephthalate, containing if desired, some polyethylene isophthalate, polytetramethylene terephthalate and polyamides.
