Abstract

536,177. Synthetic linear polyamide filaments, yarns &c. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Nov. 1, 1939, No. 29165. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group IX] The residual shrinkage of synthetic linear polyamide filaments, yarns, ribbons and like structures is reduced by heating the structure by dry heat at a temperature above 100‹C., preferably 120-180‹C., while under a low tension, e.g. not exceeding 0.3 grams per denier. As shown in Fig. 1, yarn 13 from a package 11 is led through an adjustable tensioning device 19 through a groove 29 in an electric heater 27 and then wound on a bobbin 43. In Fig. 3 yarn 53 from a package 51 is led through an adjustable tensioning device 57, through a groove 67 in a tubular heating element 65, heated by steam or other liquid or gaseous media, over a roller 83 which supplies a finish for the yarn from tank 79, and is then wound on a bobbin 91. Examples are given of the treatment of polyhexamethylene adipamide yarns. Instead of by passage over a heated element, the yarn may be heated by passing it through a non-swelling liquid. of low vapour pressure, e.g. tetrachloroethylene, or heated air or other gases may be employed. Mixed yarns and fabrics containing synthetic linear polyamide filaments may be treated. A number of yarns, e.g. a warp, may be siinultaneously treated.
