Abstract
1,010,143. Roughening fibres; yarns and threads. MONSANTO CO. Dec.10, 1963 [Dec.26, 1962], No. 48628/63. Headings D1F and D1W. [Also in Division B5] Novelty yarns are made by a melt-spinning process in which the filaments emerging from the spinneret 9 are passed through a fluidized bed contained in an elongated vertically positioned tapered tube 1. A randomly pockmarked yarn (Fig. 4) is obtained by using as the fluidized bed fine particles made of an inert infusible material having a high degree of hardness and cut irregularly (e.g. quartz), so that the filaments are scarred on contact. A randomly nubby yarn (Fig. 3) is obtained by using as the fluidized bed fine particles of a fusible material (e.g. polyethylene or other thermo plastic material) which partially fuses to the filaments on contact. Using sugar as the fusible material, a randomly nubby yarn is obtained which may be washed to yield a randomly pockmarked yarn. Aerosol fogs of water, inorganic or organic liquids may be used to produce a filament having a pimpled or wart-like surface. The spinning of nylon filaments is described. Filaments 10 emerging from the spinneret 9, pass through the tube 1, into the converging chimney 16 and hence to convergence guide 32, pigtail guide 34, traverse guide 35 and bobbin 36. A gas, e.g. air under pressure, is supplied via ports (not shown) in manifold 12 to chamber 13, and fine particles are supplied to annular space 17 from a blower and mixing chamber assembly (not shown), thus forming a fluidized bed in the tube 1. 31 is a recirculating pipe. Using fine particles made of an inert material that ricochet from the filaments after contact therewith without deforming the surfaces thereof, the bed functions as a cooling device for the filaments, a high rate of heat transfer resulting from the large particle surface area available for contact, the temperature within the bed remaining substantially uniform.
