Abstract
Cellulose carboxylates, nitrates, xanthates, ammoniacal-copper cellulose solutions, processes and apparatus for making filaments from.-Ornamental or other effects are produced on artificial filaments &c. by applying to the filaments, whilst the substance of the latter is in a sticky condition, materials adapted to adhere to their surface. Materials mentioned are bronze, aluminium, coloured, luminous, and phosphorescent powders, such as barium sulphide, zinc sulphide, or calcium sulphide. Dull or matt effects may be produced by applying inorganic materials such as barium sulphate, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, or organic substances, for example, the condensation <PICT:0341057/IV/1> products of urea or thiourea with benzidine, a-dinaphthyl urea, a-dinaphthyl thiourea, diacetylbenzidine, or dibenzoyl-benzidine. Other materials which may be caused to adhere to the surface of the filaments are short fibres or filaments, so as to obtain effects ranging from an occasional hairiness to a chenille-like material. The process may be carried out continuously with the production of the filaments and while the filaments are still in a sticky condition whether the production, is by the dry evaporative, or the wet coagulation method, or it may be carried out subsequently to the production of the filament, by applying a substance having a solvent or softening action on the substance of the filament, in order to render the filaments sufficiently sticky to allow the applied materials to adhere. When working by the latter method, the filaments may be passed over rods, rollers, or wicks supplied with the solvent. In carrying out the process, the materials may be applied to the sticky filaments by means of a gaseous stream, which may or may not contain vapours of a solvent for the substance of the filaments, so as to prevent premature setting of the filaments. In the drawing, the spinning jet 5 is surrounded by a cylinder 7 adapted to restrict the evaporation of the solvent from the filaments in the vicinity of the jet, whilst a current of air supplied with powders, fibres or the like 10 from the hopper 11, is directed by means of a jet 8, through an opening 15 in the wall of the cylinder 7, so as to blow across the path of the filaments 6. The cylinder 7 is conveniently fitted to the filter 4, and adapted so as to slide up the filter to render the p jet accessible for attention. The excess of ornamental material, fibres &c. in the air current may be removed by suction through the funnel 17 and filter 19; the air carrying solvent vapour passes out through a pipe 21 to a solvent recovery plant. Specifications 165,519, 198,023, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 340,324, 340,325, 340,436, and 340,437 are referred to.
