Abstract

<PICT:0891464/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/4> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/5> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/6> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/7> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/8> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/9> <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/100> <PICT:0891464/IV <PICT:0891464/IV (a)/122> A method of cooling melt spun shaped structures is characterized in that gaseous or liquid cooling medium is supplied to a spinning orifice in such a manner as to effect cooling of the external surface of the shaped structure, through one or more ducts adjacent the spinning orifice and lying in a common plane therewith. Apparatus for cooling melt spun shaped structures comprises a spinneret plate having a spinning orifice and a duct or ducts for supplying cooling medium being arranged in close proximity to the spinning orifice, the spinneret plate having exit openings for the spinning melt and for the cooling medium which lie in a common plane. The spinning orifice may be circular or non-circular, e.g. star-shaped, and if desired the duct for supplying cooling medium may surround the spinning orifice in a shape the same as or different from that of the spinning orifice. As shown in Figs. 9-14 cooling is effected between individual spinning slots 1 by the passage of cooling medium through one or more bores 6. In the modification shown in Figs. 15 and 16 a plate 8 providing the upper end of a cooling chamber is connected to both supply pipe 7 and spinneret 3 and is provided with a base-plate 81. This base-plate 81 is provided, on the side opposite to the cooling medium supply pipe 7 with slots 6 (see Fig. 16) which are made progressively wider. Alternatively the base-plate 81 may be constructed so as to terminate in a flat portion on the side opposite to supply pipe 7. The cooling medium can also, if desired, be conveyed through screens or frits accomodated inside the cooling chamber. In a modification (not shown) cooling medium is supplied by a duct arranged around a spinning orifice and simultaneously by bores arranged between individual slots of the spinning orifice. In the embodiments shown in Figs. 21-23 a cooling plate 18, arranged on spinneret plate 3, is so countersunk that at its central region a collar 181 is formed, the collar 181 having slots 9 through which the cooling medium can flow. If desired plat 18 may be heat insulated from spinneret plate 3. If desired cooling of the shaped structures may be effected non uniformly, e.g. by intermittent supply of cooling medium, by use of apparatus (not shown) in which the cooling duct only partially envelopes the spinning orifice, or by the apparatus shown in Fig. 29 in which spinning orifice 11 and supply duct 2 are in an oblique plane. The cooling medium may be liquid or gaseous, and supply of cooling medium to the spinning orifice may be effected by positive pressure or suction. If desired the cooling medium may be heated and when the cooling medium is gaseous it may be moistened. The shaped structures may be hollow filaments produced from spinning orifices in the bores of which solid or hollow mandrels are inserted. When hollow filaments are produced by the use of hollow mandrels cooling medium may be passed through the hollow mandrels.
