Abstract

794,302. Glass fibres. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. May 25, 1956 [May 25, 1955], No. 16292/56. Class 56. In the making of glass fibres by delivering a stream or streams 20 of molten glass into the interior of a spinner 35 having a perforated wall 40 means are provided for directly applying a lateral force to the stream to direct it into contact with the inside of the perforated wall. Several types of these means are described ; that shown in Fig. 11, for example, comprising an air jet 72 ; that in Fig. 8 comprises a positively rotated plate 110 independent of the spinner and combined in its action unit that of an air jet 123 ; in Fig. 16 the separate plate and jet are replaced by a positively rotated hollow plate 230 having in air jet 242 built into its structure ; in Fig. 19 the directing means comprise only a centrifugal plate 277 shaped as shown and driven independently of the spinner. The spinner may be combined with additional attenuating jets 50 and with jets 190 for applying a binder as in Fig. 11. The spinner may also be divided by an annular partition 140 as in Fig. 9, each portion having its own directing air jet 143, 156 and fibres of different diameters 150, 154 may be projected from the separate portions. In Fig. 10 the perforations are formed in annular channels 181 around the inside of the wall of the spinner ; the ribs 180 between the channels ensure a sufficient supply of the molten glass to all the perforations. Other forms of stream-directing means are described.
