Abstract
A die for the production of glass filaments formed from a rigid metallic plate 10 (Fig. 2, not shown), having a plurality of openings 13, 14 in which a plurality of open-ended nozzles 16 are mounted, is characterized in that each of the nozzles has an inlet 17 coplanar with, or projecting slightly from, one face of the plate 10 and an outlet 18 projecting substantially beyond the opposite face of the plate and that a skin 15 extends over the one face of the plate in continuous relationship with the nozzle inlets to act in combination with the nozzles to prevent the glass from contacting the plate, the nozzles and the skin being formed from a heat and corrosion-resistant material. The heat and corrosion-resistant material is preferably an alloy comprising 50% platinum and 50% palladium. The nozzle inlets 17 and the openings 13 are frusto-conical and in open communication with a cylindrical outlet portion.
