670,952. Drying webs. LODDING, H. Dec. 31, 1947 [Nov. 22, 1944], No. 35083/47. Class 34(i) Apparatus for drying webs has a number of air discharge slots and a number of air suction slots arranged in spaced relationship and in alternate succession, the slots being parallel to the web and at right angles to its direction of movement and guide walls or surfaces are arranged between adjacent slots parallel to the web. As shown, a number of drums 1 of triangular cross-section are arranged transversely of the length of material a being dried. The sides 3 of the drums having longitudinal slots 2 are arranged at the same level and are parallel to the web and the drums are at a distance from each other so that openings 5 are formed parallel with the slots 2. The drums 1 form a roof to the collecting chamber 6, one wall 7 of which has openings 8 connected to the suction side of fans 10, these fans delivering the air into a header 11 to which the drums are connected. Air circulated by the fans flows from the header 11 through heating ele-` ments 12 into the drums to be discharged through the slots 2, the active length of which can be adjusted by means of movable screens 13, and on to the material a, returning to the fans via the slit openings 5 to be recirculated, the portions of the sides 3 adjacent the slots forming guide surfaces for the air. In a modification four drums are arranged parallel to each other and in a circle so that the outer walls of the drums form a cylindrical surface around which the material passes on a cylindrical frame which rotates. In another modification the material passes around the drums on rollers. In further modifications a number of the cylindrical types of apparatus are arranged in a single chamber or casing.
