Class 34(1) Drying apparatus for films, fabrics, &c. consists of three sections in each of which the material moving continuously therethrough is dried by hot air issuing from a plurality of transverse slot-like nozzles, the effective air-issuing lengths of the slots in all sections being such that in the first and third sections the entire width of the material is subjected to the air whilst at the beginning of the second section only the middle 50-70 per cent of the width is so subjected which percentage progressively increases until at the end of the second setion 90 per cent of the width is directly treated with hot air. In operation, the particular width to be set at the beginning of the second section depends upon the velocity, thickness and weight of the material. Fig. 3 shows part of an apparatus comprising cylinders whilst Figs. 4, 5, 6, show forms of nozles which may be used. The nozzle slot form 2, Fig. 4, may be used in sections one and three but in section two one of the adjustable forms of Figs. 5, 6, is used, The slot ends 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, are blocked and sliding plates 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, determines the effective slot length. The slot length 2, Fig. 6, is set through plates 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, by the engagement of respective threaded nuts 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, secured thereto with a threaded rod 11 having at respective ends 5, 6, right-hand and left-hand threads.
