Abstract

1,107,474. Drying Webs. METAL-TECH Inc. 11 Aug., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 35952/66. Heading F4G. In apparatus for drying porous web material, the web passes through a housing 23 under a predetermined tension and about substantially the whole circumference of an open ended, hollow cylinder 34 rotatably mounted therein having a surface of honeycomb pattern of thin metal strips 38 extending radially to form passages or apertures 42 therebetween, which apertures comprise at least 85% of the surface area of the cylinder. The apertures permit substantially unimpeded passage of air heated to at least 300‹ F. circulated in a closed endless path by partitions 82 from large volume, low pressure blowers 63, 64 above the roll through air filters (78, 79), heat exchangers 94, 95 and through the web and cylinder for recirculation while a predetermined portion of the damp air is exhausted through a valved discharge 99. The direction of the heated air may be reversed by reversal of the blowers so that the air passes from the interior of the cylinder through the web to provide an air cushion under the web. The effective area of the cylinder may be adjusted without interruption of the drying operation by movement of axially slidable sleeves or deckles (110, 111) mounted within the cylinder. The velocity of the air is stated to be such as to create a mechanical scrubbing action on the free moisture in the pores of the web.
