Abstract
1,242,971. Slurry driers. QUAKER OATS CO. 13 March, 1969 [2 April, 1968], No. 13407/69. Heading F4G. In a drier for slurried material 34 having two parallel spaced, juxtaposed drums 12, 13 contrarotating about horizontal axes in the same horizontal plane, the cylindrical surfaces of the two drums form an elongated trough 35 having a downwardly decreasing cross-section extending upward from the nip 36, and gas discharge devices at each end of the trough 35 below the maximum height of the material in the trough to discharge compressed gas along the cylindrical surfaces of the drums 12, 13. In the preferred embodiment there are two discharge nozzles 45, 46, 49, at each end of the trough 35 discharging compressed air or steam, and material 34 fed in from pipe 33 is forced away from the edges of the rollers 12, 13 before passing through the nip 36, where it is compressed into thin films 37, 38 adhering to both drums 12, 13 which are heated by steam passing in through inlet pipe 22. The thin films are dried and/or cooked while rotating and are stripped from the rollers 12, 13 by knives 39, 40. Alternatively there may be only one nozzle at each end, or the nozzles may be mounted on end boards. If there are two nozzles, the upper is horizontal but the lower may be directed downwards preferably at 45 degrees (Figs. 6-9, not shown).
