Abstract

820,726. Tea manufacture. KERR, W. A. June 11, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 16833/55. Class 129. [Also in Group II] Tea is crushed by passing it between one or more pairs of crushing rollers driven in opposite senses at slightly different peripheral speeds, the rollers being made of rubber or the like, e.g. neoprene, each roller having a number of continuous circumferential flanges with parallel flanks and rounded extremities which interdigitate with but do not touch those of the other roller of the pair. Unbroken tea leaves placed in hopper 10 are fed on a conveyer belt 12 under an adjustable spreader 18, rotating so that the tips of its arms move in the opposite direction to the conveyer, into shoot 24 and thence to crushing rollers 20, 22 which feed the tea on to tray 26. The tea is deposited from tray 26 on to rollers 32, 34 which feed the tea on to a tray 36 from which it is discharged at 42. As shown, rollers 20, 22 and 32, 34 are of equal diameter and made of rubber. Each comprises cylindrical portions 28 separated by rounded flanges 30.
