Dough pieces fed into the machine on a belt 18 are deflected to right or left by a pivoted plate 19 which is moved by means, not shown, responsive to the input of the dough pieces so that they fall on alternate sides of a separator 20 and thence alternately on side-by-side conveyer belts 14, whence two streams of dough pieces pass through the machine. The machine includes two flanged rollers 22, adjustable with respect to the surfaces of the belts 14 ; eight rollers 23, in pairs side by side on shafts 8, 8<SP>1</SP> which are movable to or from each other, forming two adjustable passes at different levels for each stream ; a pair of grooved rollers 26 on the same shaft 27 and a pair of larger grooved rollers 28 on the same shaft 9, and a circumferentially grooved drum 30 half surrounded by a two-part deck 31. Thus the dough pieces in each stream are partially flattened by a roller 22 ; further compressed in two stages as they pass through the lips between the rollers 23, which are preferably covered with non-adherent material, e.g. polytetrafluorothylene or silicone rubber ; wound into spirals on the peripheries of inter-acting rollers 26, 28, which rotate in the same direction, and directed by a cylindrical guard 29 into the gap between the drum 30 and deck 31 (which is adjustable e.g. by a screw 33) where they are rolled around until ejected on a platform 36, their lengths being controlled by adjustable flanges 37. Air may be diverted through nozzles 38 to dry the rollers and drum.
