Abstract

1,091,378. Drying apparatus. PROCTOR & SCHWARTZ Inc. April 6, 1966 [April 8, 1965], No. 15235/66. Heading F4G. In apparatus for drying loose, fibrous, granular or like material by passage of heated air therethrough as it passes through a chamber on an endless foraminous conveyer 22 (as shown), or between a pair of foraminous endless belts, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), or on one or more foraminous drums, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown), a seal is mounted along each edge of the conveying means to prevent escape of material therealong. Each seal comprises a vertical inner guard 44 secured to the chamber wall 20 by a perforated inclined sheet 48, an outer guard 50 spacedly mounted from the guard 44 including an inclined portion 52 parallel to sheet 48 and a vertical portion 54, and a flat sealing plate 62 secured along the edge of the conveyer against which abuts a flexible seal strip 58 depending from an inclined lower edge 56 of the guard 50. In operation drying air passes through nozzles 64 above the conveyer or through a perforated pressure equalizing plate (not shown) and a portion is diverted through the sheet 48 into the channel 65 formed between the guards 44, 50 and thence onwardly through the slot formed between the lower end 46 of guard 44 and the conveyer to clear material from the edge 46.
