Abstract

1340886 Drying sheet material PILKING- TON BROS Ltd E WATSON and A J AINSWORTH 12 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970] 50576/70 Heading F4G Air or other gas is directed at a moving glass sheet 11 through a slit 19 arranged at an oblique angle (e.g. 20 or 45 degrees) to the trailing edge 20 of the sheet 11 to cause any water that has collected on the trailing edge 20 to be swept towards the corner 21 to form a drop which falls or is blown off. The glass sheet 11 is carried from a washing machine 12 on a roller conveyer 13 and passes between a pair of parallel air knives 14, 15 arranged obliquely and having slits 19 directed obliquely (e.g. at 75 degrees) at the sheet 11. Operating conditions are given. The rollers 16, 17 are provided with tyres (not shown) of greater diameter than the rollers, at intervals along the length of each roller. In another embodiment, instead of accommodating the air knives 14 and 15 between two widely spaced rollers 16 and 17, a number of short rollers are arranged with spaces between their ends to accommodate the knives 14 and 15.
