Application filed September 23, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN T. GoLn'ri-ronrn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driers, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in driers and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character in which various materials may be dried with great convenience. and efliciency.
Other objects will appear hereinatter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form or" construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises suit able heating chamber or furnace 6 having retorts or containers in the form of pipes 7 arranged therein. The pipes 7 are arranged parallel to each other and at an inclination to the horizontal, suitable burners 8 being provided in the walls of said heating chamber for heating the same by means of gas or other suitable fuel. lit their upper ends the pipes 7 project through the wall of chamber 6 and are provided with scoops 9 having openings 10 at their bases leading into the said pipes. The pipes 7 are geared together at their upper ends, as indicated, to rotate in opposite directions: and are geared to a guide shaft 11 as shown and whereby said pipes will be slowly rotated in opposite directions as will be readily understood. An exhaust hood 12 is positioned above the up per ends of pipes 7 and is equipped with a suitable exhaust fan 12, by means of which steam or other gases emanating from the upper ends of said pipes will be drawn away.

A suitable well or hopper 13 is arranged under the upper ends of the pipes 7 and into and out of which the scoops 9 revolve and pick up material to be dried which is supplied to said well or hopper, said material thus picked it by said scoops being discharged into the upper ends of pipes 7, as will be readily understood. The pipes 7 are mounted at their lower ends to rotate freely and are provided with discharge openings arranged over a discharge well 15 havlng an outwardly inclined bottom 16 and by means of "avhich'the material falling from the discharge openings 14iwill be discharged from the drier.
In use the material to be dried are supplied to the well 13 and is automatically picked up therefrom by the scoops 9 and discharged into the upper end of pipes 7. The constant rotation of said pipes causes said material to feed downwardly through said pipes, being thoroughly agitated during such downward feed, the moisture or other gases contained therein passing on through the openings 10 and being removed by the exhaust fan 12. The time during which the material is subjected to this drying action may be varied by varying the speed of shaft 11. When the dried material thus reaches the lower end of pipes 7 it is discharged through the openings 1a into the well 15 from which it may oe removed as desired. The drier is especially adapted for use in drying i ullers earth or the like but it may obviously be used for drying other materials.
While T have illustrated and described the preferred term of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modincation without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1 therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In drier, the combination with a heating chamber, of wells at the opposite ends of said chamber, material carrying elements mounted to rotate in said chamber; and means for feeding material to said elements from one of said wells, said material being discharged from said elements into the other of said wells by the rotation of said elements, substantially as described.
2. In a drier, the combination with a heating chamber, of wells at the opposite enos of said chamber material carrying elements mounted to rotate in said chamber; means for feeding material to said elements from one of said wells said material being discharged from said elements into the other of said wells by the rotation of said elements, and heating elements expos l to the interior 0i said chamber substantially as described.
3. In a drier, the combination with a heat ing chamber, oi wells at the opposite ends of said chamber material carrying elements mounted to rotate in said chamber; m ans for feeding material to said elements from.
one of said wells said material being discharged from said elements into the other or" said wells by the rotation or? said e e ments; and gas burners carried by the opposite side Walls of said chamber and exposed to the interior hereof, substantially as described.
4-. In a drier, the combination with a heating chamber of wells at the opposite ends of said chamber; material carryi 9' elements mounted in said chamber in parallel relation with respect to each other and adapted to rotate in opposite directions; and a scoop carried by each 01 said elements adjacent one end thereof for feeding material into said elements from one of said wells, said material being discharged from said elements into the other of said wells by the rotation of said elements, substantially a described.
5. A drier comprising a heating chamber; a rotatable tubular container mounted there in at an inclination to the horizontal; a scoop carried by the upper end of said container, there beii'ig opening in said container at the base of said scoop adapted to discharge material from said scoop into said container; means for supplying material to said scoop, there being a discharge open-- ing in the lower end of said container; means for rotating said container; and an exhaust hood located over the upper end or said container substantially as described.
6. A drier comprising a heating chamber; a plurality of pipes arranged in said heating chamber parallel to each other and at an inclination to the horizontal; said pipes projecting at the upper ends through the walls oi said heating chamber; scoops carried by the upper ends of said pipes there being openings at the bases of said scoops leading into said pipes; a supply well under the upper ends of said pipes in operative relation with said scoops; a discharge well un ar the lower ends of said pipes provided with an inclined bottom leading out of sa d heating chamber. there being discha k openings n the lower ends oi said pipes; and an exhaust hood arranged over the up per ends oi said pipes, substantially as de scribed.
