Abstract

329,949. Royce, F. H. Nov. 15, 1929. Driving-gear.-In a two-speed epicyclic gear for driving the supercharger a<3> of an internal-combustion engine, the change from low to high speed is effected by applying a brake h to the carrier e<2> of stepped planet gears e<4>, e<5>. The smaller planets e<4> mesh with a sun wheel c fast on engine shaft a. The larger planets e<5> mesh with a sun pinion c<1> fast on the blower spindle a<4> and also with a loose internally-toothed ring f. Normally, ring f is kept from rotating forwardly by a detent g, and wheel e<5> rolls upon it driving pinion c<1> forwardly at increased speed relatively to the engine shaft. When carrier e<2> is held fast, ring f turns backwardly and pinion c<1> is driven forwardly faster than before.
