Abstract
316,274. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. July 26, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 299,086. Lubricants for machinery; mineral oils.- In the process for the manufacture of viscous oils according to the parent Specification, extracts from the refining of petroleum oils by sulphur dioxide, for example by the Edeleanu process, are heated under pressure, with a lower olefine or a gaseous mixture containing such olefines such as oil gas, 'cracked' gas &c., in the presence of a catalyst of the Friedel-Crafts type, e.g. ferric, zinc, or aluminium chloride, to produce oils, which may be used as lubricating oils. In examples, the Edeleanu extract is heated with ethylene or propylene and aluminium chloride, at atmospheric or higher pressure. The product is washed with water and distilled in vacuo, to yield odourless viscous oils, and a resinous residue.
