Abstract
Lubricating oils are obtained by cracking paraffin waxes so that liquid products having an iodine value of at least 150-200 are formed and then subjecting these products to condensation in the presence of catalysts having a condensing action e.g. anhydrous halides, boron fluoride, &c. The cracking reaction is preferably carried out in stages with reduction of pressure and at temperatures of 440-540 DEG C. Cyclic hydrocarbons e.g. naphthalene anthracene, cyclohexane, or terpenes may be added to the cracked products before the condensation stage. 100 kgs. soft paraffin wax of meltingpoint 38-40 DEG C. are cracked at 440 DEG C. and 3 atmospheres pressure. 5 kgs. per hour of the product are led at 480-500 DEG C. over a catalyst of porous iron and nickel. 85 kgs. of liquid products having an iodine value of 210 are thus obtained and are mixed with 8 kgs. anhydrous aluminium chloride the temperature rising to 110 DEG C. and being maintained at that point for an hour. The oily layer is distilled up to 300 DEG C. and, after separation of benzines, 15 kgs. of lubricating oil, and 6 kgs. cylinder oil are obtained. In another example calcium silicide is used as catalyst and the cracked products are mixed with decahydronaphthalene and aluminium chloride.
