Abstract
In the process for the production of lubricating-oils by condensation of products obtained by cracking selected fractions produced in the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide as described in the parent Specification, the condensation catalyst which has become spent after use in a series of condensation reactions at increasing temperatures is regenerated by the addition of small quantities of fresh catalyst and, while commencing at the low conversion temperatures originally employed is used again for carrying out a series of similar condensations in which the reaction temperature is raised from condensation to condensation. Alternatively the spent catalyst can be further utilized by employing it in the conversion of cracked products of different composition and of increasing olefine content. When using a cracked benzine containing 53 per cent unsaturated hydrocarbons for the condensation reactions, 1000 gm. of this benzine is first converted at 20 DEG C. for 21 hours with 50 gm. of fresh aluminium chloride. The lower aluminium chloride contact layer is separated from the upper benzine-lubricating oil layer and used for the conversion of a further 1000 gm. of the benzine at 55 DEG C. for 24 hours the process being repeated with further 1000 gms. quantities of benzine at 90, 120, and 140 DEG C. respectively. After the fifth conversion 10 gm. of fresh aluminium chloride is added to the contact layer which is then used in the same way for the conversion of further 1000 gm. quantities of benzine commencing again at the original low conversion temperature of 20 DEG C. and increasing the temperatures to 40, 55, 90, and 120 DEG C. for the succeeding condensations. The process can then be repeated by adding a further 10 gms. of fresh aluminium chloride.
