Abstract

299,086. Johnson J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 21, 1927. Mineral and tar oils.-Oils of high viscosity and flashpoint are obtained by passing gases, rich in lower olefines e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene and amylene, which may be obtained by cracking tar or mineral oils, or as a by-product from other industrial processes, into hydrocarbon mixtures which are liquid at ordinary temperatures, in the presence of catalysts of the Friedel-Crafts type, e.g. the chlorides of aluminium, zinc or trivalent iron. The action of the catalysts may be improved by activating admixtures such as mercuric or uranyl chloride The reaction is usually carried out at temperatures up to 200‹ C., and at atmospheric or higher pressures. If cracked products containing appreciable amounts of hydrocarbons liquid at ordinary temperatures are used as a source of olefines, these mav be treated without further addition of hydrocarbons. Examples are given in which mineral oil, boiling between 200-325‹ C. or brown coal tar oil boiling between 160‹-310‹ C. is cracked in a column still at 600‹ C., and the resulting vapours are immediately passed into a vessel fitted with stirrers and containing one of the catalysts mentioned. The resulting oil is then distilled or otherwise treated to obtain lubricating oils. Alternatively, mixtures of the olefines may be passed into such oils as higher boiling petroleum fractions, engine or browncoal tar oils with stirring and heating, with or without pressure, in the presence of catalysts. The oils are then filtered from the catalyst mass, dried and further treated.
