Abstract

313,123. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. June 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils.-Valuable hydrocarbon products such as benzines, lubricating oils, &c. are obtained from tar, crude oils, &c. by subjecting the materials to a " condensation " treatment namely a treatment in which several molecules are combined by chemical reaction or by polymerization to form larger molecules, followed by a treatment with hydrogen at elevated temperatures and preferably under pressure and in the presence of catalysts. The condensation may be carried out by heating the materials in the presence of " condensing " catalysts, e.g. aluminium chloride, boron fluoride, zinc chloride, &c. or in the presence of gases having a '' condensing " action particularly gases containing oxygen, e.g. air, industrial waste gases steam, or gases containing compounds of sulphur or chlorine. Dehydrogenating catalysts, e.g. vanadium pentoxide may also be present. Air at 160-180‹ C. is led through a porous plate into an oil obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of brown coal and mixed with 5 per cent of vanadium pentoxide. The products are led with hydrogen at 430-450‹ C. and 200 atmospheres over a catalyst containing molybdenum, zinc, and magnesia. A lubricating oil having a flash point of 191‹ C, and viscosity of 14‹ Engler at 50‹ C, is obtained. A better yield is obtained if the pressure is increased to 1000 atmospheres. A heavy benzine of boiling point range of 180-250‹ C. mixed with water vapour is passed at 700‹ C. with high velocity of flow over an iron catalyst containing free alkali. The high boiling point products are treated with hydrogen at 1000 atmospheres and 430‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst containing molybdenum, chromium and manganese.
