Abstract

320,891. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 23, 1928. Materials for making gas, coke, and other products.-Residues obtained from the treatment of hydrocarbons such as mineral oils, tar oils, olefines, &c. with metal halides or with a metal such as iron or aluminium and halogen hydride, or the residues obtained directly by refining hydrocarbon oils such as mineral oils, tar oils, benzines, &c. with sulphuric acid, are subjected to dry distillation above 360‹ C. with an addition of substances having a neutralizing or refining action, such as calcium carbonate or other basic salts, fuller's earth, lead salts or oxides, iron oxide, powdered quicklime or calcined magnesia. .Extraneous gases or vapours such as steam, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide may be introduced and reduced or elevated pressures employed. The first runnings from the distillation of residues from refining hydrocarbons with sulphuric acid may be. worked up into lubricating oils by polymerization and condensation, e.g. with the aid of metal halides and gaseous olefines, if desired in admixture with other hydrocarbons by the process according to Specification 299,086, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. Mixtures of different kinds of residues including at least one containing metal halides or one acid resin may be utilized. In an example' 60 parts of a tar oil residue containing aluminium chloride. are mixed hot with 20 parts of a tar oil acid resin and 20 parts of a tar oil distillation residue together with 20 per cent of finely powdered limestone, the mixture when distilled at 520‹ C. yielding 55 parts of an oil comprising 60 per cent lubricating oil, 20 per cent fuel oil and 20 per cent low boiling point constituents.
