Abstract

Polymers for improving liquid hydrocarbons are obtained by treating propylene, or gases containing propylene but no ethylene, below 0 DEG C. with polymerizing agents such as boron fluoride or chloride of aluminium, iron, or zinc. Reaction-accelerating substances such as mercuric chloride, or retardants such as aluminium oxide or zinc oxide may be present, the polymers may be formed at raised or normal pressure and in presence of the liquid hydrocarbons, and the reaction mixture may be heated to normal temperature after the main reaction has ceased. Specifications 293,487, [Class 2 (iii)], 358,068, 432,310, and 455,114 are referred to.ALSO:Liquid hydrocarbons are improved by adding polymers obtained by treating propylene, or gases containing propylene but no ethylene, below 0 DEG C. with polymerizing agents such as boron fluoride or chloride of aluminium, iron or zinc. The polymers may be formed in presence of the liquid hydrocarbon and at normal or raised pressure, reaction-accelerating substances such as mercuric chloride, or retardants such as aluminium oxide or zinc oxide may be present, and the reaction mixture may be heated to normal temperature after the main reaction has ceased. Specified liquid hydrocarbons are lubricating oils, benzines, gas oils, lignite-tar oils, hydrogenation oils, and oils obtained by interaction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen. In an example 10, 20, 30 or 40 per cent of polymerized propylene is added to a refrigerator oil. Specifications 293,487, [Class 2 (iii)], 358,068, 432,310, and 455,114 are referred to.
