Abstract

Plug couplings combined with switches. - A switch for use with electric irons, vacuum cleaners &c. is mounted in one portion a of a plug and socket coupling, and comprises a plunger contact c adapted to be depressed into engagement with a fixed contact f against the action of a spring b by means of a lever q mounted for example on the iron p, the end of the lever q engaging the head d of the plunger c. The sockets g, k of the coupling fit over the pins n, o arranged on the iron, and the lever q is depressed by gripping the handle p of the iron. To enable the circuit to remain permanently closed when the handle is released a lever arranged e.g.; on the portion a is moved into a position over the lever q: As a safeguard against overheating the contact f consists of fusible metal which may flow into the adjacent free space and so break the circuit between the contact c and the spring e on which the contact f rests. Or alternatively the contact c or spring e may be made of fusible metal and a separate intermediate member f dispensed with.
