Retractive switches; switches, quick-break; handles; springs, arrangement and disposition of. -Retractive switches for electrically heated irons &c. are provided with a latching arrangement in conjunction with a pivoted spring-pressed contact blade, so arranged that a comparatively weak spring pressure on the operating handle has to be overcome while gripping the handle, the stronger spring producing a quick break on the switch blade being brought into action only when the operating handle is sufficiently released, the circuit being broken simultaneously at four points in series. The blade B pivoted at b with retractive spring E has a nose B<3> which is engaged by a spring-pressed sliding catch D when the operating lever C is depressed. The handle C is pivoted at c and has a comparatively weak retractive spring F. As the handle is released, a cam surface C' engages ears on the catch D, releasing the blade B which is moved with a quick action by the spring E to break the circuit. The switch contacts comprise pairs of fixed V-contacts A<1>, A<3>, A<3>, A<2>, bridged by insulated plates B<1>, B<2>, carried by the switch blade. The pair of contacts A<3> are integral or electrically connected together, leads J, J' being connected to the outer pair A<1>, A<2> so that the circuit is broken at four points in series. To make these breaks simultaneously the fixed contacts are suitably stepped or bevelled. The operating-lever C is shaped to conform with the handle G when the switch is in the closed position, Fig. 2, the switch parts being arranged within a recess in the handle.
