Retractive switches; switches, qvick-action; handles. - In switches fitted in the handles of electric irons &c., a knife-blade F operated on and off with a quick action carries insulated contacts f<1>, f<2> on opposite sides of the blade adapted to engage fixed contacts G<1>, G<2>. G<3> arranged to provide four breaks in series. The contacts G<1>, G<2>, shown separated in Fig. 5, are mounted on the contact G' but insulated from it, and current is adapted to flow from the contact G<1> along the blade f<1> to the contact G<3> and thence along the blade f<2> to the contact G<2>. This contact arrangement is a modification of that described in Specification 189,573, the lessened resistance it offers to the knife blade making it specially suitable for a " quick-make " switch. The blade F is actuated on and off by a " dead-centre " toggle arrangement H connected to the grip handle B which is returned to the position shown, when released, by a retractive spring K. The handle B may be retained in the " on " position by the fusible cartridge described in Specification 258,990. The leads to the switch may comprise respectively the one end of the heating resistance of the iron, reinforced and brought up to the handle, and an asbestos-covered stranded copper cable.
