[Class 138 (ii).] A baseboard 15, Fig. 2, of insulating material is mounted in a recess in the hollow handle of an electric hand - iron and a pair of contact studs 17, Fig. 4, are fixed thereon. One of the supply leads to the heating unit is broken and the broken ends are passed through longitudinal grooves 13 in the handle and are connected to the contact studs as shown. A connecting member 20 biased by a spring 24 to circuit-open position is pivoted at 21, Fig. 2, to the baseboard and the other end of the spring 24 is secured to a rod 22 which is slidably mounted in guides 23 on the baseboard and is biased by a spring 25 to the position shown in Fig. 4. One end of a bell-crank lever 26, Fig. 2, engages in the slotted end of the rod 22 and a bowshaped lever 29 is pivoted to the other end of the bell-crank lever, the other end of the bowshaped lever being pivoted in the handle. When the handle and bow-shaped lever are grasped in using the iron the rod 22 is moved forwards to rotate the connecting member 20 to bridge the contacts 17. A plunger 30 is slidably mounted in the handle and when the iron is turned up on end, the free end of the plunger rests on the table a. The weight of the iron by itself is insufficient to overcome the spring 25 and the switch normally remains open but the operation may depress the iron about the plunger which will then close the switch and maintain it closed so that the iron may be left on end either with the current off or on as desired.
