HANDLE FOR SADIRQNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1921.
Application filed August 29, 1919. Serial No. 321,241. I
To all whom it may doncefm:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. SoHILnnR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Handles for Sadirons, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to improvements in handles for electric sad irons and the like wherein an electric switch contained within the handle operates in conjunction with the heating coils of the iron.
The primary object of the present invention is to rovide an improved handle for electric sad irons.
A furtherlobject of the invention is to provide an improved article of manufacture comprising a handle having an electric switch located within said handle whereby the heating current may be more readily and conveniently controlled.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar arts throughout the said specification and rawings, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved article the sad iron being indicated in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of this handle disclosing the construction there- 0 Fi 3 is a view of the contact end of the hand e; and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the opposite end of the handle.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a handle of suitable material having a central bore 2 therein. A suitable electric switch 3, having oppositely disposed contact or operating buttons 4 and 5 extending beyond the said handle 1 is located at one end of the bore 2.
Closing the opposite end of the bore 2 I have provided a suitable contact or connection plug 6 held in position by a screw 7 within the handle 1, and rovided with two parallel metallic sleeved ores 8 for the reception of contact terminals of a male plug, not shown.
One wire 9 leads from one of the metallic sleeved apertures 8 to the switch 3 while another wire 12 returns from the switch 3 and with a third wire 14 from the remaining metallic sleeved aperture 8 leads to a plug 15 adapted for engagement with the terminals 16, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawin of the iron 17, also indicated in dotte lines.
The ends of the handle 1 are recessed as at 19 for engagement with the ends of an arcuate supporting member 20 of the usual type and shape having apertures 21 by means of which the usual screws 22=may be employed to secure said supporting member 20 to the sad iron.
The novel features of the invention are, first, that the handle may be attached to any standard electric sad iron by the simple expedient of removing the old handle and attaching the new one, second, the controlling switch is convenient and readily accessible for shutting off or turning on the heating current.
The light colored button 4 when pushed inwardly will turn on the current, so that when it projects it is a visible and cons icuous indication that the current is turne off. When the black button 5 is projecting it is a conspicuous indication that the current is turned on.
Being located at the thumb end of the handle 1, it is obvious that the heating current' may be easily and readily controlled at a convenient point without leaving the iron to operate the switch at a remote point as in the resent state of the art.
aving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a detachable hollow handle; an electric switch mounted within the handle and haw ing operating buttons extending beyond the surface of said handle; a contact plug mounted in one end of the handle and electrically connected to the switch; a second contact plug electrically connected to the first mentioned plu and the switch and adapted for connection to the terminals of an electric sad iron; and means for detachabl securing said handle to a sad iron to rep ace a handle un-provided with current controlling means.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a detachable hollow handle; an electric switch mounted within the handle and having operating buttons extending beyond the surface of said handle; a contact plug mounted in one end of the handle and electrically connected to the switch; a second contact plug electrically connected to the first mentioned plug and the switch and adapted'for connection to the terminals of an electric sad iron; and an arcuate member having the ends thereof secured to the ends of the handle and having apertures between said ends to engage securing screws by means of which said handle may be secured 10 to an electric sad iron to replace a handle tin-provided with current controlling means.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
JOHN J. SCHILDER.
