Description
Jan, 6. '1 H. l. BREY HANDLE FOR ELECTRIC IRONS Filed March 21, 1925 Patented Jan. 6, 1925.
UNITED STATES HAROLD I. BREY, OF BROOKVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE FOR ELECTRIC IRONS.
Application filed March 21, 1923. Serial No. 626,568.
To all whom it may comem:
Be it known that I, HAROLD I. BREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookville,.in the county of Jefferson and State ofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles ,for Electric Irons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in detachable handles for electric sad i irons, and has for its prime object to provide a handle having a switch carried thereby, of such novel arrangement and construction as to prevent the iron from overheat- 1 ing by carelessness on the part of the operator in not turning off the wall switch when further use of the iron is not required.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle of the above indicated character, having a novel combination and arrangement of parts, which requires preheating of the iron before starting actual use of same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle for sadirons of the above indicated character, having simple and efficient means for closing or opening of the circuit of the heating element.
A still ,further object of the invention resides in the ease and convenience with which the electric current may be switched on and ofi, thereby lessening the liability of scorching while using, and also reducing the cost of operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a handle of the above indicated character, which is simple in construction, durable, eflicient for the urpose intended, and one that can be manu actured at a very low cost. These and -like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically point ed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sadiron showing my improved switch with controlling handle attached thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged lon itudinal section through my improved han le.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the improved switch used in my handle.
Figure 4 is a vertical section through my.
improved switch.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views. In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates an electric sadiron, which has secured to the top thereof a U-shaped frame 2 on which is mounted my improved switch containing handle 3. The numeral 4 designates the wires leading from the wall switch to the plug 5 of the sadiron, and 6 the wires leading from the handle to the plug 5. It is to be understood that the wires are insulated in the usual manner.
The handle 3 is attached to the end of the U-shaped frame 2 by set screws 7.
The handle 3 intermediate the ends of same, is provided with a circular recess 8 in which is positioned my improved switch 9, which comprises electric terminals 10 in engagement with plates 11. A push button comprising a metal stem 12 adapted to be mounted to an insulated knob 13 is held out of engagement with the plates 11 by a coil spring 14. When the knob 13 is pushed downwardly against the tension of the spring 14, the stem 12 is forced into enga ment with the two spaced plates 11, which closes an electric circuit leading to the iron 1.
Mounted adjacent the front end of the handle 3 is a switch lever 15. The switch 35 lever 15 is pivotally mounted on a knob 16 1 and is provided at one end withi a downwardly extending portion 17 for engagement with the button 13, so that when the switch lever is moved to a position reverse from that shown in Figures 1 and 2, the circuit betweenthe plates 11 is closed by the stem 12, thus allowing the iron to be partly heated before using same. The lever 16 is provided with an upwardly extending 95 V-shaped portion 18 intermediate the ends of same, which prohibits the use of the iron while same is heating, as the portion 18 would engage the palm of the hand which would prevent a firm grip from being secured on the handle.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,it is thought that any further explanation as to the construction, operation and objects of this invention are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the 1 preferred form of my invention, I realize a wall plug,
that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed; therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of the construction shown, nor to the combination or arrangement of parts. f
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a handle for electric flat irons, a socket plug mounted in one end of the flat iron, a switch positioned within said handle and having electrical connections with said plug socket, means for closing said switch carried by said handle, and means carried by said'handle for preventing use of said iron while said switch is closed.
2. In an electric fiat iron, a handle in combination with a plug socket adapted to engage a heating element within said iron, means for connecting said socket plug with a switch positioned in said handle, means for connecting said socket plug with said switch, means for heating said heating element upon closing of said switch, a switch lever carried by said handle for holding said switch in a closed position, and means formed in said switch lever to handle having its lower end suitably connected to the base of the iron, insulating wires connected to said plug and wires leading from the handle to the plug, said handle having a circular recess formed intermediate its ends, an improved switch comprising electric terminals and plates positioned within said recess, a metallic stem provided therefor for closing an electric circuit leading to the iron, a switch lever being mounted upon the handle of the iron, said lever having an upwardly extending V-shaped portion intermediate the ends thereof for prohibiting the use of the iron while heating thereby preventing a firm grip being secured on the handle.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD I. BREY. Witnesses:
