[Class 38 (v).] Handles.-Tongs for electrically stunning animals constitute a switch for controlling the current supply, the said switch being actuated by closing pressure on the handles only when the tongs encounter mechanical resistance. The arms a, h, which are of metal sheathed with insulation, carry electrodes c, d and are pivoted together by a bolt e passing through ears u fixed to the arms. Pins wand slots v on the ears coact to prevent complete closing of the tongs. The handle part f of one or both arms comprises a pivoted insulating sleeve m carrying a plug k and contact i which co-operates with a contact h on a lug g on the arm, the lug g and sleeve m being normally pressed apart by a spring o. Fingers p, q on the sleeves coact with setting collars s, r on the arms to prevent closing of the circuit when the pins w reach the ends of the sockets v. In a modification, Fig. 2, the arms are pivoted together by means of a round box and lid y, the handle of the limb a being rigidly attached to the box and that of limb b pivoted to the lid at x and connected thereto at g by a spring. Contacts h, i are carrried by the box and pivoted handle respectively. An .abutment z in the path of the pivoted handle prevents closing of the circuit when the pin v reaches the end of the slot w. In a modification of the latter form, the handle of the limb b is rigidly attached to the lid y and the limb itself pivoted and spring-connected thereto, the abutment z being dispensed with.
