294,069. Holophane, Ltd., (Soc. Anon Francaise Holophane). Jan. 12, 1928. Reflectors.-A reflecting and diffusing plate 1, for use in a road or railway signal, advertising sign, or vehicle rear lamp, is made of glass or other transparent moulded material and is formed on its front face with a number of spherical convexities 2 forming a dioptric surface, and on its rear face with relatively small double-reflecting prisms 3 or the like, the mean plane of which coincide with the focal plane of the corresponding convexity. The convexities may be of equal or unequal size, and their face lie in a plane or ether surface. Rays of light from a distant external source incident in directions r, r<1> are reflected back in substantially parallel directions r1, r1<SP>1>. Metal reflecting surfaces, such as polished or matte aluminium, or nickled brass, may be placed behind the plate to increase its reflecting power.
