Abstract

537,896. Lamp lenses. MASON, F. Jan. 18, 1940, Nos. 1078 and 3956. [Class 75 (ii)] A lamp is fitted with a light-transmitting means, adapted to produce an anti-dazzle effect, or to be suitable for " black-out " requirements, constructed of two or more transparent plates a, b of flat or lens form, the contacting faces of the plates being shaped to provide right angled prismatic bodies a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> with edges f, g which are in substantial register. These edges are so inclined that light is refracted from the edge f of the plate a through a layer of air, and is then refracted through the layer b and emerges therefrom in such a way that the rays are in a particular plane or on one side only of this plane. The faces g are in planes perpendicular to the planes of the faces f, and these are arranged to form with the vertical an angle of 41 degrees, which is the critical refractive angle when glass is the material used and air the material which separates them. The faces g are rendered opaque, or reflecting and opaque by inserting dull or bright inserts between them. In the modifications shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the prismatic bodies a, b are shaped so as to form cavities k of parallelogram-like configuration, or of triangular configuration adjacent to the faces g, or f, g.
