Abstract

467,697. Reflectors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 28, 1936, No. 12059. Convention date, May 9, 1935. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XI] An auto-collimating reflex unit comprises a pair of reflecting surfaces at right-angles to each other to return incident light within a limited angular range in one plane, combined with cylindrical light-condensing means to limit the angular range in a plane at right-angles thereto. The form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a cylindrical lens 1 having a horizontal axis, and a pair of vertical reflecting surfaces 2, 3 at right-angles to each other, the plane MM bisecting the angle between the reflectors being at right-angles to the medial plane of the lens. The distance between the lens and the reflectors is such that rays traversing the lens normally are focused in the plane MM after one reflection. A number of the auto-collimating units are juxtaposed to form a reflex surface. The reflecting surfaces instead of being plane as shown may be cylindrically curved about horizontal axes. The refracting and reflecting surfaces may be formed on opposite faces of a single piece of glass. The reflector may be embodied in a rear lamp as shown in Figs. 22 and 23. The upper part 10 of the lamp lens may be provided with the usual Fresnel rings and the lower part 12 is formed with cylindrical elements to concentrate light on the reflecting surfaces 14. As shown in Fig. 28 the orientation of the reflecting surfaces may be so arranged that the bisecting planes make progressively increasing angles with the normal to the front surface from the centre outwards. In Figs. 29 and 30 the light condensing means comprise cylindrical reflectors 30 which receive the incident light and concentrate' it on the reflecting surfaces 32. The surfaces 30 may be formed by stamping a metal sheet, and the reflecting surfaces 32 by stamping metal strips which are riveted to the sheet. Alternatively the reflectors 32 may be formed on a sheet of glass attached to the metal sheet, the glass between the reflecting strips being plane.
