Abstract
460,666. Optical polarizing-apparatus. UNDERWOOD, L. R. May 28, 1935, No. 22716. Divided out of 457,443. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XI] In a vehicle lamp, searchlight, or other lamp emitting a concentrated beam of light, substantially the whole of the light emitted by the lamp bulb and concentrated by the lamp reflector is plane polarized substantially horizontally. A self-contained fitting, attached to the front of the lamp casing, plane polarizes the light horizontally. The lamp and its front fitting may be constructed similarly to those described in Specification 457,443, the prisms of the front fitting running horizontally instead of at 45‹ to the horizontal. The front fitting may be rotatably adjustable. In another form, shown in Fig. 8, plates 13, 14 formed as a series of convex and concave cylindrical lenses respectively, together stratify the beam into a number of narrow parallel beams, each of which impinges on a slat 17 which is a polarizer composed of a pile of films. Between the slats 17 are parallel reflectors 18. The slats transmit beam components polarized in one plane, and reflect beam components polarized in planes at right-angles onto the reflectors 18, which reflect them forwardly. Mica strips 19 are arranged in the paths of either set of these beams to rotate the plane of polarization so that all the light projected is polarized in the same plane.
