Abstract
290,460. Rennerfelt, I. June 29, 1927. Induction furnaces.-A high frequency furnace uses flat spiral coils of internally cooled tubes, power factor correction being obtained by the use of condensers or a synchronous machine. Additional cooling may be obtained by passing compressed air through channels 17 in the furnace walls. A three phase furnace employs coils 7, 8, 9 under the furnace and coils 11, 12, 13 above the roof. Each of the latter comprises two coils arranged close together. A flat coil 14 shaped to the furnace wall may also be provided. The liquid charge 5 is heated by induced currents. A body 6 may be heated by radiation from the charge. If the physical properties of the charge do not permit direct heating by induced currents, heating bodies 15, 16 of nickel chromium alloys carbon, or carborundum may be employed. If the charge is of silver the heating bodies may be made of wrought iron. A modification employs a single flat coil arranged at the bottom of the furnace.
