Abstract
289,483. Garelli, A. April 29, 1927, [Convention date]. Cylinders.-In a cylinder having cooling fins, e.g. the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine or compressor, a machined steel &c. barrel 1 carries the upper fins 2, while the lower fins 6 are formed on a cast sleeve 5 of aluminium or magnesium alloy in which the passages are also formed, e.g. the exhaust passage 10, the inlet passage 12 and the transfer passage 7. The barrel 1 may be formed from a steel bar, and the sleeve 5 may be shrunk or pressed on. The sleeve may be integral with the upper half of the crank case, or, where the crank case is divided axially, the sleeve may be in halves 5, 5<1>, Fig. 4, integral with the halves 14, 14<1> of the crank case. The exhaust passage 10 and part of the transfer passage 7 may be formed in a separate undivided sleeve 5<11>. A vertical rib may project into the passage 10 and may be formed with an axial air passage for cooling. The sleeves 5 of two or more cylinders may be formed integral with common inlet and exhaust manifolds.
