428,893. Cylinders; cooling. BRITISH CONTINENTAL MOTORS, Ltd., 150, St. Vincent Street, Glasgow.-(Continental Motors Corporation ; 12801, Jefferson Avenue East, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) May 9, 1934, No. 13977. [Class 7 (ii)] In engines having sleeve valves the ports of which expose the cylinder walls to the combustion pressures, stresscontrolling means are provided overlying a portion at least of the cylinder walls which are thus exposed. Fig. 2 shows a sleevevalve engine, the cylinder of which is formed with cooling - fins 20 around which is shrunk on a ring C. Some of the fins 20<1> are thicker than the others, to provide adequate support for the ring C, and one of these fins 201 may divide the inlet port 16. In another form of sleeve-valve engine, Figs. 5 and 6, a shell D extending the full length of the cylinder is shrunk around the fins, and thus forms cooling passages 50, through which air circulates as indicated by the arrows 64 in Fig. 6. Intercylinder baffle plates 63 are fitted as shown to direct the cooling-air through the passages at the rear side of the cylinder. Each cylinder is provided with diametrically-opposed exhaust ports 51 near the head, and a similar pair of exhaust ports 52 at the other end, the inlet passage 56 being intermediate and constituted by an annular chamber within the shell D and opening into the cylinder by ports spaced therearound. The exhaust ports are connected to manifolds 53, 54, and these may be lagged between the cylinders to avoid heating the cooling-air. Specification 305,090, [Class 7 (ii)], is referred to.
