Abstract

458,009. Cylinders. SOC. DES. MOTEURS SALMSON, 68, Rue Pierre Charron, Paris. April 23, 1936, No. 11646. Convention date, May 23, 1935. [Class 7 (ii)] A cylinder head has a single exhaust valve 3 and two symmetrically-arranged admission valves 19, the corresponding passages 14, 24 being arranged directly away from the cylinder head and transverse to the cylinder axis, the effect of the cooling fluid, flowing across the head, being thus enhanced. In the air cooled engine shown transverse cooling ribs are extended over the casings 8, 20 which carry the cam shafts. In a multicylinder in-line engine, individual heads are connected by ribs 25, 26, 27 and by casings rounnd the cam shafts, the latter, being provided with covers 13, increasing the rigidity of the head. In a W-engine, Fig. 5, two rows B, C of cylinders are arranged symmetrically with their exhaust valves adjacent and the third row A is separated by a partition 35 ; the cooling air flow is as shown by the arrows, the exit from the row B being provided for by a port at the rear leading to a conduit 36. The exhaust pipes pass through the cowling 15, by sleeves 18.
